Elijah is one of the greatest choral works of the nineteenth century, full of memorable melodies and scored for a large chorus and orchestra. The struggles and triumphs of the great Old Testament prophet are depicted in music of operatic intensity and great dramatic power.
Highlights include Elijah’s triumph over the prophets of Baal, many memorable arias (including “Lord God of Abraham” and “O rest in the Lord”) while Elijah’s ascent into heaven in a chariot of fire is depicted magnificently.
First performed in Birmingham in 1843 it has long been a favourite work with British choirs. A fine team of soloists join with South Bucks Choral Society to present this splendid masterpiece.
