As this will be Iain Ledingham’s final concert as Artistic Director of the Festival, he has chosen three of his favourite works for the occasion, all three of which have a strong pastoral flavour. Haydn’s Symphony No73 (La Chasse) ends with exhilarating hunting music with joyful fanfares for horns and trumpets. Gerald Finzi’s Romance for String Orchestra is a superb example of his pastoral style where his music evokes the beauty of the English countryside in a most lyrical and haunting manner. The main work is the wonderful and much loved Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. This masterpiece takes the listener from the 'awakening of happy feelings' as we enter the countryside via the evocative 'scene by the brook' pervaded with birdsong, followed by the exuberant merrymaking of countryfolk leading to a tremendous thunderstorm. The storm fades and is followed by a glorious hymn of thanksgiving for the beauty of nature.
