A rare opportunity to hear Idomeneo, Re di Creta (King of Crete), one of the greatest tragic operas and a work for which Mozart had great affection. More than any other work, this extraordinary masterpiece first revealed the depth and passion of Mozart’s mature style and its influence can be felt in many of his later operas, concertos and symphonic works.  The story of Idomeneo’s return from the Trojan War and his confontation with Neptune, which leads to the necessity of sacrificing his son, Idamante, is told in music of great power and grandeur.

We have assembled a cast of brilliant young singers (present and former students at the Royal Academy of Music) to play the five superb roles in this work. The semi-staged performance will be directed by Katherine Bond, whose productions of The Marriage of Figaro, Cosi fan Tutte and Semele have been highlights of our Festivals in previous years.

As in the Greek tragedies the Chorus provide eloquent commentary and response to the drama as it unfolds. Our first-class professional chamber orchestra is joined by South Bucks Choral Society to sing Mozart’s magnificent choruses.
