Music by Xenakis, Séjourné, Bach, Rosauro, Monti and Glennie

We are delighted to be featuring this exceptional young musician from our local area who was the youngest finalist in the percussion category of the prestigious BBC Young Musician 2018 competition. His programme includes the four pieces he performed in the BBC Young Musician percussion final and will display a wide variety of instruments including vibraphone and marimba.

Alexander started playing drums at the age of 5, and tuned percussion at the age of 11. He is studying for his GCSEs at St Clement Danes school and attends the Junior Royal Academy of Music every Saturday. Alexander is a member of the Buckinghamshire County Youth Orchestra, the Buckinghamshire Youth Wind Ensemble and the Chalfont Wind Band.

In 2017, he was joint runner-up in the youth category of the International Marimba Competition held in Belgium. As well as being the youngest finalist in the Percussion Category of the BBC Young Musician 2018 competition, he came second in the Southern Percussion International Tuned Percussion Competition held at the Purcell School.

In 2017, Alexander won the Buckinghamshire Young Musician of the Year competition and, as part of the prize, he performed the 3rd movement from Emmanuel Sejourne’s Marimba Concerto with the BCYO in the Royal Albert Hall. In September 2018, he was a semi-finalist in the Italy Percussion Competition marimba category.

Most music for marimba and percussion has been written very recently. It is only in the past 40 years that the instrument has become more popular and recognised as a solo instrument. Despite the repertoire being fairly contemporary, the range is extremely diverse, as will be apparent from the programme.
