With Operatic Arias And Duets By Rossini, Donizetti And Verdi
Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle is a delightful and much-loved choral work full of high spirits as well as beautiful, lyrical Arias and Duets.
After a hugely successful career as an operatic composer Rossini more or less retired for 34 years after writing his last opera. He composed occasional smaller scale works which he described as his “péchés de vieillesse” (sins of his old age). The “little, solemn Mass” the last of these works, was named with more than a hint of irony - it is neither small or particularly solemn, apart from a few deeply felt moments. He wrote on the final page; “Dear Lord, here it is finished, this poor little Mass. Have I just written sacred music, or rather sacreligious music? I was born for Opera Buffa as you well know. Not much technique, a little bit of heart, that’s all. Blessings to you and grant me Paradise”.
South Bucks Choral Society will be joined by four outstandingly gifted soloists from the Royal Academy of Music to perform this splendid piece and, in the first half, a selection of great operatic Arias from the same period.
