  • Beethoven  Overture The Creatures of Prometheus

  • Finzi   Dies Natalis

  • Beethoven  Symphony No 3 “Eroica”

Iain Ledingham (Conductor)

Nia Coleman (Soprano)

In our opening programme two magnificent works by Beethoven frame Finzi’s masterpiece , Dies Natalis.

Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony “Eroica” must surely be one of the most thrilling works in Western music. Originally dedicated to Napoleon, it is a work of magnificent breadth and  heroic idealism. The exhilarating outer movements enclose the profound Marcia Funebre and an amazing Scherzo, a tour de force of brilliant orchestration. The last movement is based upon a theme from his Ballet Music, The Creatures of Prometheus and we will open the concert with the fine Overture to that work.

Gerald Finzi is one of the best-loved of twentieth century English composers. His song cycle for soprano and string orchestra Dies Natalis is generally considered to be his masterpiece. It sets words by the 17th century poet Thomas Traherne which evoke a glorious vision of the world as viewed through the eyes of a newborn child. Finzi’s music perfectly catches the rapturous lyricism of the words. We are delighted to welcome soprano, Nia Coleman to perform this wonderful piece. Currently studying on the opera course at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, she is a singer and actress of rare imagination and sensitivity.
