Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings is perhaps the most delightful of all works for string orchestra. Richly romantic in character and abounding in the kind of glorious and memorable melodies which are so characteristic of Tchaikovsky’s music.

Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings is one of his most accessible and best-loved works. A great lover of poetry, Britten had an extraordinary gift for setting words to music. For the Serenade he selected a wonderful group of poems by Tennyson, Blake, Ben Jonson and Keats (amongst others) all concerned with night, sleep and dreams. The settings of these poems for tenor and solo horn are superbly evocative and often deeply moving.

Holst’s St Paul’s Suite is another lovely work for string orchestra and ends with a glorious arrangement of “Greensleeves”.
