Cosi Fan Tutte or the “School for Lovers”  was the last of Mozart’s great collaborations with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte – the most remarkable partnership in all opera. The opera begins with a reckless wager between two young men and their older friend Don Alfonso on the fidelity of their girlfriends. The young men pretend to leave for the army then return in disguise to woo each other’s beloved. What ensues is an extraordinary exploration of the frailty of the human heart, on a par with the great novels of Jane Austen.

The music has a sensuous beauty, unique even among Mozart’s many masterpieces. Cosi Fan Tutte (“all women behave in the same way”) alternates between brilliant comedy and great poignancy as the four lovers become entangled in a web of increasing complexity and turbulent emotions. Don Alfonso’s “School for Lovers” leads to an extraordinary and disturbing conclusion for the four young people, whose emotions are depicted with great subtlety and sympathy in Mozart’s wonderful music.

Our superb Amersham Festival Chamber Orchestra will be joined by six outstandingly talented young singers to perform this great work. The opera will be directed by Katherine Bond whose previous productions of operas by Mozart, Handel and Rossini have been highlights of past Amersham Festivals.
