Bach’s St Matthew Passion is a masterpiece which repays endless hearing. Bach set the last chapters of St Matthew’s Gospel to music of unforgettable power and emotional depth. The narrative is interwoven with solo arias which reflect most movingly on the unfolding action, interspersed from time to time with Bach’s wonderful harmonisations of great Lutheran chorale melodies in which the two choirs and orchestras are united in response to the drama of the Passion story.
Iain Ledingham was conductor of the Royal Academy of Music’s Bach Cantata Series, a ten year project to perform all of his church cantatas, which began in January 2009 and ended in December 2018. He is privileged to have had the opportunity of performing this immense corpus of church music for choir and orchestra which forms the largest part of Bach’s musical output – over 200 religious compositions for each Sunday and other occasions in the church year, and a tradition in which Bach’s Passion settings also belong.
