Iain Ledingham (Conductor)

Julian Leaper (violin) Martin Outram (viola)

We are delighted to welcome two very distinguished string players, Julian Leaper and Martin Outram, as soloists in Mozart's wonderful Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola. They are both members of the Maggini Quartet, one of the finest British string quartets, with an international reputation for their many recordings and concert tours. The Maggini Quartet appears frequently in prestigious concert series at home and abroad and makes regular media broadcasts. Recent international visits have included Dubai, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and France. They also have an annual summer tour in Norway and will be returning to Denmark  for a major tour in 2017.

Their acclaimed recordings have won international awards including Gramophone Chamber Music Award of the Year, Diapason d’Or of the Year and a Cannes Classical Award, and have twice been nominated for GRAMMY® Awards. Their unique collaboration with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, performing and recording his ten ‘Naxos Quartets’, was hailed as “a 21st century landmark”.

The Sinfonia Concertante is one of the greatest works of Mozart's early maturity - a work of haunting beauty with much quasi-operatic drama between the two soloists and the orchestra. It will be preceded by Mozart's exuberant Symphony No 34 in C major a splendid curtain-raiser. We end the concert with his glorious "Linz" Symphony , composed not long before Le Nozze di Figaro. The outer movements are a tour de force of orchestral colour virtuosity and energy while the Andante second movement contains music of great lyrical beauty.
