The Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major is one of the loveliest and best known of the great series of concertos Mozart composed in Vienna.  The orchestration is wonderfully colourful, with much soloistic writing for the woodwind instruments in collaboration with the solo pianist.  The piano will also feature in Finzi’s haunting Eclogue – in fact the slow movement of a piano concerto he did not live to complete.  Our principal horn player Richard Wainwright has played under the batons of Simon Rattle, Bernard Haitink and Yehudi Menuhin among many other leading conductors and has held orchestral positions in Germany, Portugal and Ireland.  We look forward to hearing him play Mozart’s delightful Horn Concerto No. 2.  The programme also affords a rare opportunity to hear Mozart’s Symphony No. 33, an exquisite work, displaying great lyrical beauty in the slow movement and playful virtuosity in the finale.  This splendid programme will resound to fine effect in the lovely acoustic of St James Church, Gerrards Cross.
