Elijah is one of the greatest choral works of the nineteenth century, full of memorable melodies and scored for a large chorus and orchestra. The struggles and triumphs of the great Old Testament prophet are depicted in music of operatic intensity and great dramatic power. The large orchestra is deployed with Mendelssohn’s customary genius for orchestral colour, particularly in Elijah’s great contest with the prophets of Baal and later in his glorious ascent into heaven in a fiery chariot. First performed in Birmingham in 1846 it has long been a favourite work with British choirs.
Our fine team of soloists includes the distinguished bass Mark Wildman in the title role.
