The music of Claude Debussy explored on his 150th anniversary
Debussy’s 150th Anniversary in 2012 has prompted celebratory events and musical conferences around the world, in several of which Roy Howat is participating. Roy offers a study day that approaches Debussy’s works not only as pure music, but also as the creation of an extraordinary artist and intellect, and that shows how discoveries in the last few decades have sharpened our perception and our playing of Debussy’s music.
Roy Howat’s insights come partly from his concert giving, partly from his researches and partly from his pioneering work for the Paris-based New Complete Debussy edition. Other insights come from the publication six years ago of all Debussy’s known letters, which throw light on his life and art, as well as the discovery in 2001 of Debussy’s very last piano piece. This was written in the most extraordinary circumstances and left neglected for 80 years, before it eventually received its concert, radio and CD premieres from Roy Howat. That story (and performance) will feature among numerous others on this Debussy study day.
Born in Scotland, Roy Howat enjoys an international reputation as both a pianist and a musical scholar of distinction and finesse. A graduate and former Fellow of Cambridge University, Roy Howat is equally renowned for his lively lectures and masterclasses, and holds the position of Keyboard Research Fellow at London’s Royal Academy of Music.
As a student Roy Howat made a special study of French music in Paris with Vlado Perlemuter, one of the world’s great Chopin interpreters who also worked with Fauré and Ravel. Roy’s concerts and masterclasses regularly take him worldwide. His recordings include Debussy’s complete solo piano works and various CDs of chamber music, including Fauré’s complete works for violin and piano.
Tickets: £28 (including a light lunch with a glass of wine)
