Brandenburg Concertos Nos 2, 4 and 5 reveal a remarkable range of instrumental colours – the sparkling solo passages for flutes and solo violin in No 4, the spectacular line up of solo trumpet, recorder, oboe and violin in No 2 and the groundbreaking writing for solo harpsichord, flute and violin in No 5. The extraordinary cadenza in No 5 gives us a glimpse of Bach’s legendary skills as an improviser and the virtuosic writing foreshadows the development of the piano concerto. We also feature fine concertos by Bach’s two greatest contemporaries, Handel and Vivaldi.
