This concert season will feature all six of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos and we begin the series with a splendid combination of Baroque and Classical works by Bach and Mozart. The brilliant young Spanish pianist Irene Alfageme joins Iain Ledingham in Mozart’s effervescent Concerto for Two Pianos and in Bach’s wonderful Concerto for Two Pianos in C minor, a transcription of the greatly loved Concerto for Two Violins. Mozart wrote the Concert Aria “Ch’io mi scordi di te!” as a farewell to the Irish singer Nancy Storace who sang the role of Susanna in the first performance of Le Nozze di Figaro. He composed the piano part for himself to play and the piece is a wonderful fusion of two of his favourite genres – the operatic aria and the piano concerto. Brandenburg Concerto No 1 with its rich and rustic-sounding scoring for oboes, horns and strings begins our journey through these great works.
