2009 sees the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s
birth, which we celebrate with two of his best loved and most atmospheric works. A regular and popular visitor to England, Mendelssohn also travelled widely in Scotland where the scenery delighted his romantic temperament. The Hebrides Overture was inspired by a boat trip to see Fingals Cave.
The magnificent “Scottish Symphony” seems to embody many aspects of Scottish history and landscape in its rich and colourful music.
We look forward to welcoming Huw Morgan as soloist in Haydn’s exuberant Trumpet Concerto. Huw was winner of the Brass Section in the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2006. He is currently studying with Professor James Watson at the Royal Academy of Music.
