A varied programme of music played by two outstanding local young musicians
George Ross, born in 1991, has been a student at the Purcell School since 2002, studying with Alexander Boyarsky with assistance from the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme. Here he is principal cellist with the Symphony Orchestra. From September he will be continuing his studies at the Royal College of Music, having been awarded a scholarship. By April he will have performed at the Wigmore Hall as a soloist and in chamber music no fewer than four times in the last three years, and has been awarded prizes in Porec (Croatia), Liezen (Austria), in the Popper Competition in Hungary, and in the Marlow Festival Concerto Competition.
He works regularly with Tomoki Park in public concerts.
He has played solo cello in Duruflé’s Requiem for the Tallis Festival Chorus, which was recorded by BBC Radio 3 for broadcast in ‘The Choir’ series. In January he played in a piano trio for John Sergeant and has just performed as a soloist in the Mayfair Arts Club. Recently he played solo Bach at St John’s Smith Square and next month he will perform at St Martin-in-the-Fields as a soloist in their lunchtime concert series. He also plays with the professional group, The Locrian Ensemble.
In his spare time George is a keen cyclist and recently has taken an interest in photography.
Tomoki Park was born in 1990 in Japan and started studying the piano and composition at the age of five. He is currently attending the Purcell School where he receives a scholarship under the Government’s Music and Dance scheme. He studies the piano with Tessa Nicholson and composition with Haris Kitos. Tomoki also studied chamber music under James Gibb until his retirement in 2006.
Since joining the Purcell School in 2002 Tomoki has performed in many concerts, both at the Purcell School and across the UK including Wigmore Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, and Purcell Room at the Southbank Centre. In 2004 he performed a Mozart Concerto with the CYC Orchestra. From the age of 13 Tomoki has been performing regularly at the Wigmore Hall, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. In 2006 Tomoki was a prize winner at the 10th International Competition for Young Pianists in Ettlingen and won the top prize at the 14th Young Artists’ Piano Competition in Tokyo.
In Japan, he has appeared in major concert venues including the Suntory Hall and the Opera City. He was the first recipient of the Christopher Ross Memorial Scholarship, where he received lessons on piano accompaniment from Deborah Shah.
Tomoki is also an active composer and won first prize for his Theme and Variations with Fugue in the EPTA Composition Competition 2006.
