Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A major, No 23, is one of the finest of the great series of concertos composed in Vienna in the 1780’s. The outer movements display great brilliance and charm while the central Andante in F sharp minor is one of his most poignant and soulful creations. Mozart wrote the Concert Aria “Ch’io mi scordi di te!” as a farewell to the Irish singer Nancy Storace who sang the role of Susanna in the first performances of Le Nozze di Figaro. He composed the solo piano part for himself to play and this wonderful concert aria is a unique fusion of two genres in which he excelled - the operatic aria and the piano concerto. We end the programme with Schubert’s enchanting Symphony No 5.
